A substance that blocks a receptor (target) and stops other substances attaching to it and triggering an effect.

När man pratar om läkemedel är en antagonist ett ämne som förhindrar verkan av något annat ämne. Detta sker genom att det binder till något som kallas receptor. Receptorer finns bl.a. på celler, där de styr en viss aktivitet. Denna aktivitet kan på så sätt hämmas m.h.a. en antagonist.
