Form of programmed cell death that is mediated by cysteine proteases called caspases.

Apoptos betyder programmerad celldöd av antingen gamla, skadade, eller på annat sätt onödiga celler. Detta innebär en kontrollerad nedmontering av cellen, så att den lätt kan tas om hand om av omgivande celler. Icke programmerad celldöd, s.k. nekros, kan bl.a. ge upphov till en inflammation vilket skadar omkringliggande celler.
