On Clinical Trials Day, we celebrate the people and progress behind Swedish ATMP research. Discover active trials and the Hospital ATMP Centers driving change.
May 20 marks International Clinical Trials Day—a global occasion to recognize those behind the clinical research driving tomorrow’s medicines. At ATMP Sweden, we celebrate the researchers, clinicians, coordinators, and patients who bring advanced therapies to life through their dedication and collaboration.
This day is not only about data and protocols. It’s about people—those working tirelessly to turn cell and gene therapiesinto treatments that can transform lives. Their contributions shape the future of healthcare and offer hope for patients with conditions previously considered untreatable.
In recent years, Sweden has seen a steady increase in clinical studies involving Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs). These include therapies based on recombinant genes, live cells, or tissue engineering—many of which are being tested at Sweden’s leading university hospitals.
To provide transparency and improve access to information, the national ATMP hospital network releases a regularly updated list of these studies. You can view the most recent edition here:

This list only includes trials that have applied for regulatory approval through the Swedish Medical Products Agency via a CTIS or EudraCT number.
Sweden’s ATMP infrastructure is supported by a national network of Hospital ATMP Centers, established under the ATMP2030 sub-goal ”Implementation in Healthcare”. These centers are hosted at several of Sweden’s university hospitals and serve as regional knowledge hubs and contact points for the development and clinical use of ATMPs.
What makes them especially effective is their collaborative approach. Together, they form a united front for implementing advanced therapies in Swedish healthcare—sharing expertise, overcoming logistical challenges, and working toward quicker delivery of ATMPs to patients in need.
📍 Current centers include:
Uppsala University Hospital
Sahlgrenska University Hospital (Gothenburg)
Region Skåne
Region Östergötland
Region Västerbotten
Region Örebro
Karolinska University Hospital (Stockholm)
Each center supports clinical trial activities while fostering local innovation in ATMP delivery. Learn more about their roles here:
