Mitokondrier är en s.k. cellorganell och kallas ofta för cellernas kraftverk. Anledningen är att de tillverkar en energirik molekyl som heter adenosintrifosfat, ATP, av kolhydrater, fett och proteiner. ATP kan sedan användas av cellen när den behöver energi. I en cell kan det finnas upp till flera tusen mitokondrier.
