Undifferentiated cell of multicellular organisms with the ability to carry out both self-renewal and asymmetric cell division, and to provide cells that can differentiate into other cell types.

Stamceller är omogna ursprungsceller, som har förmågan att utveckla sig till ett stort antal olika specialiserade celler. De kan även dela sig och på så sätt bilda flera stamceller. När befruktningen sker, och spermien och ägget möts, så uppstår en enda stamcell, som sedan genom delning bildar hela människokroppen.
