Bildandet av en tumör sker med hjälp av processer som liknar de som krävs för att bilda nya vävnader under en organisms utveckling. En vävnad består att ett flertal celltyper med specifika funktioner vilka bildas från stamceller. Analogt med de stamceller som finns i normala vävnader finns i (skiv)epitelcancer en grupp av celler som har förmåga att återskapa en hel tumör. Dessa celler kallas för tumörinitierande celler, eller cancerstamceller.
