Observable physical, morphologic or biochemical properties of a cell or organism, as determined by the genotype and environmental factors.

En fenotyp är en organisms märkbara egenskaper, det vill säga det som syns utåt. Dessa egenskaper uppkommer genom en samverkan mellan arvsanlaget, DNA, och miljön. I vissa fall påverkar inte miljöfaktorer en ärftlig egenskap, till exempel vilken blodgrupp och ögonfärg man har, och i dessa fall bestäms fenotypen direkt av genotypen. En genotyp är således en ärftlig egenskap oavsett påverkan från miljön.
