Ability of certain tissues or sites in the body to suppress or tolerate potentially damaging immunological responses to foreign antigens, in order to protect vulnerable structures such as the eye or central nervous system.

Fenomenet som förekommer i vissa vävnadsställen och organ (t.ex. den främre kammaren och hornhinnan i ögat, hjärnans parenkymal vävnad och foster) för att tolerera ett känt antigen och därigenom undertrycka det inflammatoriska immunsvaret. Främmande vävnadstransplantat överlever under längre perioder när de placeras inom sådana immunprivilegierade platser och organ.
