type of single-stranded RNA virus that contains reverse transcriptase, allowing it to produce DNA that becomes integrated into the host cell genome, making it a useful vector in gene therapy

Virus som har den speciella egenskapen att föröka sig genom att använda cellens egna produktionsmekanismer. Viruset använder ett speciellt enzym, omvänt transkriptas, för att föra in sin genetiska information i cellens DNA. På detta sätt får viruset kroppen att producera nya virus. Det finns olika retrovirus och de delas in efter den sjukdom de orsakar, ett av de mer kända är HIV-viruset.
