Acousort: Towards point of care, closed cell therapy dose preparation
ATMP Sweden is proud to welcome it’s 200th member! Acousort, a Swedish company, founded in 2010, has become the 200th member of the ATMP Sweden community! With 20 employees based in Lund, the research behind the company originated from Lund U over 20 years ago. The company uses acoustics to separate or capture particles, for example cells, to change the formulation of the liquid carrier in a closed system and in the absence of centrifugation. There are few companies addressing this need for healthcare devices that will avoid open processing of cells and reduce the need for specialist staff and facilities in healthcare for these types of preparations.
“We are excited to now be a part of the ATMP community and continue bringing innovation within automated sample preparation for cell therapy applications to the market. Being able to interact and collaborate with the community is essential in the path towards developing novel therapies,” says AcouSorts Commercial Director Agnes Michanek.
Acousort has been active in the ATMP Sweden ecosystem since 2017, as one of the original CAMP partners, a critical partner of the project “Label-free sorting | ATMP Sweden”. Acousort was also one of the founding partners of IndiCell, towards pluripotent stem cell derived cell therapy bedside delivery solutions and negative and positive sorting for safer cell therapy products.
“It has been wonderful to see the Swedish ATMP space developing over the last 7 years, through contributions like those of CAMP and VOG Cell, but also the development and role of ATMP Sweden in connecting our ecosystem. AcouSort will, as a new member of ATMP Sweden, contribute to the continuation of growth and innovation in the ATMP sector,” says Professor Stefan Scheding, who is a CAMP work package leader and Board member of AcouSort.
It’s a proud day for us in welcoming our 200th ATMP Sweden member! Just 4 months after welcoming our 100th! It is important that as a network we recognize the diversity of need in developing ATMP innovations, and work together with companies like AcouSort to reduce bottlenecks in the pipeline towards broad patient care. While AcouSort solutions historically has been best suited for processing smaller cell samples with throughputs around 0.5 mL/min the development over the last years has been directed towards increasing sample processing speed to accommodate high throughput applications. In the pipeline are a new generation acoustic modules enabling high throughput cell processing at around 5 mL/min opening up for potential applications in cell isolation and cell wash for cell therapy applications. Acousort will have a booth at our November 25/26 conference, ATMP Sweden 2024 Malmö!, make sure to visit them to learn more and discuss partnering opportunities!
We really appreciate the support of our members towards keeping our ATMP Sweden communication and network support functions alive. With so many organisations and individuals showing their membership support in this first year, we move into 2025 with confidence that our platforms have the support they need to thrive.
We look forward to hearing from other organisations with interest to join our membership. I wonder who member number 300 will be?

To mark the important milestone of welcoming member number #200 here is some more information about Acousort below:
AcouSort specializes in advanced sample preparation of biological samples, offering automated and integrated processing solutions for cells and extracellular vesicles. Our products are designed for diagnostic applications and cell therapy manufacturing workflows.
Currently, cell preparation for therapeutic applications relies heavily on centrifugation. Despite significant advancements in diagnostics and therapeutics over the past decades, sample preparation methods have largely remained unchanged. At AcouSort, we aim to replace this labor-intensive technology with a more efficient alternative.
Our acoustofluidics technology combines sound waves and microfluidics to separate and isolate cells, providing a modern alternative to centrifugation. This innovative approach enables the complete automation and integration of the cell isolation process, revolutionizing cell therapy manufacturing.
Acoustofluidics offers a label-free, contact-free, and fully automated method for isolating and washing of cells. The gentle sound waves ensure cell health is maintained, delivering samples with exceptional quality and precision.
AcouSort develops and supply cell processing modules as single use OEM modules to our Life Science instrumentation partners. The modules are designed to be easy to integrate with the flow path of third-party instruments enabling fully enclosed cell isolation, cell wash and up concentration workflows. Together with partners, we develop customized solutions that are easy to integrate into any instrument.
